Joomla!-powered Startups

I've been thinking a lot about startups lately. It seems like every time you turn around, there is a new startup built on Ruby on Rails or some other rapid application development framework, but you never really see any Joomla!-powered startups. I'm not talking about startups that cater to the Joomla! community like JoomlaShack, Azrul, or even Cory Webb Media. I'm talking about startups with applications built on the Joomla! framework. There are millions of sites built on Joomla!, but not a whole lot of applications.

The closest example I can find is Quizilla, but that's not as much a startup as it is a product in the "N" Network from Nickelodeon. I know that the framework in Joomla! 1.5 is powerful enough to build anything, so why haven't we seen more startups? Maybe it's time one of us does something about it.

Have you come across any Joomla!-powered startups?

Interesting point...it's obvious that Joomla Developer Trends are increasing, but I haven't come across any apps yet. Hadn't really thought about it. What gives?

Gaboogle Us? Startup
written by George Jones, March 28, 2009
Hey Cory,

I understand that we live just up the street from each other! I am here in San Antonio, trying to get a Joomla! powered startup off the ground on a shoe string budget to say the least. I'd like to open some dialogue with you about this project based on Joomla! as the OS and JomSocial as he social engine, and I can assure you that it is a truely unique business model. I am lacking the development power to pull it all together at the moment.

You've touched on an awesome subject matter and I'd like to share my journey with the Gaboogle Us? venture with you if you are open?

Maybe you we can connect at my site?

Kumbooka - a home on the web for all your stuff
written by Gary Edmonstone, April 08, 2009
You make a very good point.

I think I am one of the few who have actually picked the Joomla framework for my web startup. OK, so I have quite a bit of custom work on my site, but in principle I am using Joomla for the framework, jReviews for my DB, JomSocial for my members, and "Kumbooka Shelves" my custom designed component to allow users to easily find they stuff they own, or would like to own and add to their shelves. I am pulling everything form Amazon Web Services, and presenting the data with jReviews. I would love you to take a look and comment.

Kind regards
